Constituent assembly is an assembly of representatives chosen through election and nomination from different provinces and princely states who gather for the purpose to frame constitution, after drafting the constitution constituent assembly will be disbanded


Important note: Constituent assembly is different from Parliament


Some key facts about our constituent assembly

  1. Idea of constituent assembly was first proposed by MN Roy in 1934

  2. Before partition our constituent assembly had the strength of 389, however after the partition it became 299

  3. Dr. Sachchidananda Sinha was the first temporary chairman of constituent assembly

  4. Our constituent assembly first met on 9th December 1946

  5. On 13th December 1946 Jawaharlal Nehru moved the "Objective Resolution"

  6. Our constitution was adopted on 26th November 1949 and came to force on 26th January 1950

  7. The time taken to frame constitution was 2 years 11 months 17 days

  8. Money spent in framing the constitution was 64 lakhs

  9. Constituent assembly had met for 11 sessions

  10. The last session was held between 14th November 1949 to 26th November 1949
