States in India

  • They have separate government for administration which is unicameral or bicameral in nature

  • Governor is the executive head

  • Relationship with centre is federal in character

  • There is space for autonomy for functioning of state

  • All states have representation in Rajya Sabha

Union territories in India

  • They are directly ruled by union government with or without legislative assembly

  • President is the executive head who administers through administrator/Lieutenant governor

  • Relationship with centre is unitary in character

  • There is no space for autonomy for functioning of union territory

  • Union territories with legislative assembly alone have representation in Rajya Sabha
