During 1510 Portuguese defeated Bijapur king which lead to their settlement in Goa, whose rule then lasted in this region for 450 years which heavily influenced their culture.


After India's Independence our government made claims over Goa region but Portuguese shown some friction to leave Goa, however by 1961 our government with the support of naval and airforces invaded & occupied Goa.


Finally Goa became part of India on 19th December 1961 and Goa became union territory of India from 20th December 1961 through retrospective effect of 12th Constitutional Amendment, 1962 and Government of union territory act, 1963


Later Goa, Daman, Diu reorganisation act, 1987 conferred statehood to Goa on 30th May 1987 however Damn and Diu continued to be union territory


The most interesting fact to note here is, Portuguese were the first Europeans to come to India also they were the ones last to leave India

  1. Goa is the highest per capita income state in India

  2. It is the smallest state in India

  3. It is the most urbanised state in India among all states

  4. Panaji is the capital of Goa, however largest city is Vasco da gama

  5. Konkani is the official language of Goa however Marathi is used for official purposes

  6. Goa is 3rd in HDI among all territories of India

  7. Dhalo is the popular folk dance of Goa

  8. Zuari is the largest river in Goa

Major Concerns

  1. Illegal mining draining state's resources

  2. Water scarcity due to high demand caused by tourism migration

  3. Water pollution caused by mining activity

  4. Water pollution caused by Pharma Industries

Measures can be taken

  1. Water treatment and recycling could be way forward to deal with industries before releasing into nature and creating waste management system could be another solution

  2. Water recycling also help to reduce water scarcity problems

  3. There are eleven rivers flowing through Goa, conserving and protecting natural water is one of the best way to meet domestic demands

  4. Effective utilisation of natural water resources through construction of reservoirs

  5. Last resort option could be construction of desalination plants for drinking water crisis

  6. Nearly 70% of Pharma products produced in Goa are exported which contributes for 12% of India's Pharma exports, even-though this help us to attract forex reserves but this happens at the high risk of domestic population, tougher legal provisions & mechanisms will give government officials to take strict measures.
