After our independence Bilaspur region was merged with Himachal Pradesh & eventually Himachal became union territory in 1956, later Himachal Pradesh was emerged as eighteenth state of Indian Union in 1971




Key facts

  1. Shimla is the capital of Himachal Pradesh

  2. High in HDI index and occupies 8th place among all territories

  3. Shigri glacier in Himachal is the largest in Asia

  4. Great Himalayan National Park is is UNESCO world heritage site

  5. Chail Cricket Ground built in 1891 is the highest cricket ground in the world

  6. It is the first smoke-free state in India

  7. Second largest producer of fruits, it is also called as Fruit bowl of India

  8. Himachal is known for several folk dances include Kayang, Rakshasa, Bakayang, Nati, Jhanjhar and Jhoor

  9. Tashigang village in Himachal is the world's highest electoral polling station

Major concerns

  1. Flora and Fauna were highly affected by global climate change

  2. Tourism inflow & increased traffic in almost all towns due to same road capacity

  3. Some districts like Lahaul & Spiti are isolated during winter season

  4. Prone to disasters like landslides, cloud bursts, flash floods and snow avalanches

  5. Emerging water crisis caused by climate change

Measures can be taken

  1. Rain water gathering, Judicious use of water, building multiple water storage tanks, prevention of contamination of water bodies and ground water help to manage water crisis

  2. Conserving energy, switching to green power provider, reduction in consumption of meat & dairy products help to deal with global climate change & its impact with other parts of the world

  3. Bringing multimodal transport system helps to reduce the tourism traffic and increase the tourism revenue

  4. Providing well connected meteorological support in all regions and improving water drainage system will help to deal with cloud bursts and flash floods.
