India flag code 2002 and recent amendment | The New Indian Society

Before flag code of India 2002, the display of national flag was governed by provisions of The Emblems and Names(Prevention of improper use) act, 1950 and The Prevention of insults to national honour act, 1971. Flag code of India 2002 was an attempt to bring together all laws, conventions, practices and instructions for the benefit of all


Flag code of India 2002 (Before amendment)

  1. Flag should be of any size but always length to height ratio should be fixed at 3:2

  2. Flag cannot be used for commercial purposes

  3. Khadi or hand-spun material to be used to manufacture flag

  4. Member of public, private organisation or educational institute allowed to hoist the national flag

  5. Flag to be flown only between sunrise and sunset

Flag code of India 2002 (Amended provisions in 2021)

  1. Khadi material as well as polyester and machine-made are also allowed

  2. National flag can remain hoisted through the night as well
