During British rule the present-day regions of Nagaland was administered under Assam Province, this region remained part of Assam after our independence however from the year 1955 Naga hills region began to demand secession from Indian union, consequently Indian government began to administer the Naga hills region directly from the year 1957


Later during Naga people's convention meeting in July 1960 the issue was resolved through accord to constitute Nagaland as separate state and Nagaland achieved statehood in 1963

  1. Kohima is the capital of Nagaland

  3. Agriculture is the major source of income nearly 71% population of Nagaland depend on agriculture

  4. Most of Nagaland is covered by tropical and sub-tropical evergreen forests

  5. One of the world's hottest Chilli pepper Bhut Jolokia also called as Ghost pepper is home to Nagaland

  6. One of the most famous bird Great Indian hornbill is found in Nagaland

  7. Nagaland is also called as Falcon capital of the world

  8. To visit most of the regions of Nagaland Indian citizens of other states need Inner line permit

Major Concerns

  1. Ethnic conflicts

  2. Tribalism and Nepotism Nexus

  3. Influx of illegal migrants from Bangladesh

  4. Geographic isolation

  5. Instability in the region hampering tourism revenue

Measures can be taken

  1. People-centric development in villages, Initiatives to unify different tribes for shared goals, Government incentives to establish medical and engineering institutions & government recognition for people concerns helps to reduce ethnic conflicts and bring stability in the region

  2. Common development centres, Mixed tribes districts and Mixed tribes assembly constituencies helps to increase cohesiveness among tribal groups and create united society

  3. Improving rail & road connectivity, government policy measures to increase agricultural trade with Indian mainland and initiatives to improve tourism in the region help to reduce the issue of geographic isolation

  4. Nagaland has more than 1000MT of high chemical grade limestone reserves and 600mn MT of crude oil, utilization of these resources for new business opportunities boost tax revenue as well as divert people from tribal issues and involve them in productive work
