The present-day region of Sikkim was ruled by Namgyal-Chogyal dynasty till it became princely state of British empire in 1890


After our Independence in 1947 Sikkim retained administrative autonomy and it was given special protectorate status through which India controlled defence, diplomacy, communications and external affairs of Sikkim


Later Sikkim became full-fledged 22nd state of India in 1975

Measures can be taken

  1. Expansion of protected areas, increasing buffer zones and improving participation of local communities in devising policy measures helps to reduce human-wildlife conflicts

  2. Strengthening the system of early warning systems & monitoring systems, legal policy measures to reduce construction in critical areas, encouraging human settlements in more safer areas and expert inputs in reducing development activities in hazardous zones helps to deal with landslides

  3. Development of alternatives for roadways like mountain railways, ropeways and improving the capacity of air transport facilitate farmers to transport goods

  4. Sikkim has high potential in several areas like agro and food processing, 8000MW in hydropower and the state policies naturally act as favourable for pharma sector, utilizing all this potential helps to bring economic development in the state
